Free Flying: Aerial Athletes Camp in Argentina!

Winter and covid time has been way too long for my traveller´s heart, so when I got a short notice invitation to join the Red Bull aerial athletes performance camp at Andy Hediger´s AeroAtelier in La Cumbre, Argentina, I was on my way in no time! Since Guido told me about that magical place about a 9 hour drive inland from Buenos Aires, I had always wanted to visit our great visionary friend and his crew. Now was my chance to meet with some of the finest international air athletes one could dream of!

And as Andy said - this is about sharing our experience, and the chance to look into the other air sports and learn to fly all different sorts of wings! I was totally inspired by everybody´s skill and modesty. None of us needed to post any achievements, cause we all are top in our tiny niche, but curious beginners and happy to learn from each other. Skydiving, Wings Suit flying, Basejumping, Paragliding acro and de-bagging, hang gliding, Extra300 aerobatics, Alpha training flights, helicopter flights, plus yoga or circuit training lessons in the morning. In great, warm summer weather, with the most warmhearted crew you can imagine, looking after all of us like we were family!

It was a physical and mental reset for me, something I had been looking for without knowing it. Being free again, traveling with friends to places I´ve never seen before, being able to fly, learn, play, instruct others, share incredible moments, imagine new projects, party, just be me.

Then my personal highlight - I summoned the condors, and they happily flew with me in many thermals at Cuchi Corral!!! The biggest wing span of a bird I every flew with, yet so relaxed, peaceful and graceful!

Sorry that I didn´t have time yet to put this whole air adventure into words and pics, I´ve been busy to fit it in between work flights, but I promise I will write a nice article in German and English for the magazines for you!

Meeting Alvaro Soler at Porsche Open Space IAA 2021

After a great little flight high above Rauschberg with my friend Giergl, I managed to get back to the Porsche Open Space in time to enjoy a live unplugged concert of singer/songwriter Alvaro Soler. Since Rebi and I always play his songs in our car when we drive to our hang gliding adventures, it was fantastic to experience how powerful his live performance is!!! Man, I missed concerts so much, and didn´t even realize that until yesterday.

Talking with respect and curiosity about other cultures when traveling, mentioning how important it is to learn foreign languages, Alvaro spoke from my heart.  I love it when people stay modest and grounded despite their talent and success - because really, aren´t we just luckier than many others that we got the chance to live our dreams?

At Porsche IAA Munich

What a dream! I am invited to present my Red Bull Porsche hang gliding clip and pursuit of my dreams at the international automobile exhibition IAA Munich at the Porsche Open Space! Presenter Sarah Elsser and I showed the audience how dreams can develop and get wings! Seems the audience enjoyed seeing the sky with my eyes, cause there was quite an appreciating applause after our presentation!

I am in awe of so much beautiful, perfect design! Since my childhood, I always loved Porsche design, cause my designer heart just loves beauty and function connected in perfection!

Porsche x Corinna Schwiegershausen

After a long break, it felt great to get into the air again! I am very motivated to qualify for our open (men´s) national team to join European and World Championships in hang gliding. I need to perform extremely well in competitions that count for the world ranking, and especially when the weather is difficult and requires a lot of creative and persistent flying, I seem to do well.

Lucky that Hessenmeisterschaft served that weather where patience is needed. I flew almost on my own the whole time, and it paid off to fly on different paths - with my 2nd place in the international, and 1st place in the regional championship, I moved up to 4th position in the German national ranking and am currently qualified as part of our national team!

You can activate subtitles in your own language for this video, hope you enjoy it!

Back to work

I wish I could have gone to the next competition in Italy too. Marco Laurenzi´s home turf is San Donato di Val comino, about a three hour drive south of Monte Cucco. Higher mountains, beautiful national parks.

Instead I had to drive home, which took 14 hours, due to traffic jams, school holiday times, roadworks and accidents on very crowded highway through Italy, Austria and Germany, also it didn´t help traffic that the German train drivers went on strike for some days.

My next work schedule is coming up soon, and I´m thankful that I get the chance to fly away every now and then, meeting friends that I couldn´t visit otherwise.

But I´m already dreaming of the next hang gliding adventures!

Cucco last task: 150km around 3 trunpoints to Spoleto, and Awards!

Results task 4 Results overall

Saturday was the last comp day, and we were promised even better weather than the day before. The organizers set an ambitious 150km task - telling us to speed up to be back for the award ceremony in time ;)

I was really happy to see such a big number on the taskboard, cause I like long flights very much! It´s been many years since I´ve seen Spoleto from the air.

I took off early again, but the promised 3000m turned into a not quite 2000m boundary layer, with a wind stronger than the day before. The first 30km of the flight were the toughest, going through really bad lee side turbulence, in the blue, trying to grab every little bit of lift I could. Half way down to Gualdo Tadino, finally the clouds formed, and we could get a decent height.

The furthest southern turnpoint at Spoleto was a long glide out and back to the ridge, so it took a bit of rodeo again to get up and face a bloody headwind, as usual, going up north.  And as expected, I ended up on my own again for about 80 km. It didn´t matter, I was happy to fly high along the clouds and didn´t care too much about my time - it was my last flight in the area for  a while, and I wanted to celebrate every minute of it! I was rewarded with the best views ever - the air was so clear that I could see both sides of the coast of Italy when I was at 3000m! No, I´m sure it wasn´t hypoxia ;)

In goal, I basically collapsed, cause the zipper of my harness didn´t want to close properly and only went up to my knees, so the whole 5 hours of flying were a bit uncomfortable. But who cares.

Many happy faces at the awards. Our top German pilot Roland Wöhrle finished 5th, then I explained to Mario Alonzi in 4th place why Tomas Suchanek called it "Potato medal", Christian Ciech in 3rd did a great jump up with his amazing, fast task win on the last day. Filippo finished second, and a superhappy Marco Laurenzi was celebrated by his fan club like a rockstar!

Andrea Fusi won the sports class award, Konrad Baumgartner won rigid class.

I finished 16th overall, had a great time and am looking forward to the Europeans at Cucco next year! Flavio and his large support group did an excellent job to offer us pilots a safe and fun competition. It felt great to race the sky again with my friends from all over the world!

Special thanks to my friend Rebi - without her dedication, I would have probably not dared to go. She was not just a committed driver, but helped me on take off and after landing. Driving back on Sunday in the main holiday season meant a painful 14 hour drive for me, and about 18 hours for her, despite having started at 3am in Sigillo already.

And, last but not least, thanks to Moyes for that sweet little RX3 pro that just keeps climbing like a rocket! So much fun to fly that beautiful wing!

Cucco task 3: 120km around 4 turnpoints

On task 3, we saw the best flying conditions of the week, because the wind was weakest. Again we started at Cucco North take off, going quite far to the southeast, then back up into the Gubbio valley, south again, and then, against quite a headwind, to goal in Costacciaro.

When I took off, the sky was still blue. I didn´t mind flying an extra hour waiting for the startgate to open, cause I didn´t have much flight time this year, and I enjoy boating around the Cucco peaks a lot! It was a race start again, as we were only 29 pilots, and the forecast was for some overdevelopment to our south.

Once we crossed to the Fossato di Vico ridge, we could fly dolphin style, just gliding along under the clouds!

Going back up northwest into the Gubbio Valley, I got dropped at the second last turnpoint by Roland. The valley was in total shade when I turned around, and as I knew I would face quite a headwind into goal again, I made sure I had enough height even if the glide was bad.

The winner of the day, Filippo again, flew an amazing average speed of 59,4 km/h! On 13th place, I was still very happy about my 46,6km/h speed :) Amazing also that the top 9 pilots, with Roland Wöhrle amongst them again, all finished in goal within 5 minutes! A great training day for the European Championships that hopefully take place at Monte Cucco next year!

Results of task 3 here!

Cucco Task 2: 73km around 4 turnpoints

On day three, we went to the Cucco North take off again. The wind had slightly dropped, so a task of 73km to the southeast was set.

Again I was stoked to fly to the furthest point with the lead gaggle, but turning around and going back headwind, they shook me off in no time. I tried to fly the clouds in the flatlands and eventually got some good lift to cloudbase, but while the height was enough for Fabien to go around the last turnpoint and into goal, I had to find another thermal, cause the headwind just killed my glide. Those are the moments when I wish there was a "light weight and small glider bonus" - Sasha can probably write a book about it by now.

Anyway, I finished 15th of the day and was so happy that Flavio took this great photo of my landing at goal. Also, our whole German team made goal that day, with Roland of course being the top pilot and scoring an amazing 3rd of the day, then me, Jörg and Jürgen. Filippo won, with Marco second.

Results of task 2 here!

Day 2 cancelled - strong wind

On the second day, we drove to a different take off. Clouds looked great, but the wind direction for our launches was anything but ideal, also the wind speed was picking up in the valley already. Forecast was for a gusty 40km/h, in the afternoon we experienced even more. I was happy that the safety committee and organizers decided to cancel the day. We enjoyed the scenic trip and beautiful views anyway!

Monte Cucco competition - training for the Europeans!

Comp page and results here!

Since Tuesday Flavio Tebaldi and his great team organize the Piero Alberini international competition at Monte Cucco in Umbria, Italy.

I decided to go, because my great friend Rebi agreed to come with me to drive and help. Having my own driver is a luxury I usually don´t have, but in covid times is for me the only way to feel safe, cause I need to go home and keep taking care of my parents after this week off duties.

The first day we experienced really stong northerly winds, so we went to the Cucco North take off. In the air I was with the leading group until the furthest turnpoint, then facing a lot of headwind turning around towards goal. The guys punched the headwind and went along the valley, I desperately tried on the ridge and eventually landed after about 3/4 of the course. Would have been nice to make goal, but I had a great flight and excellent landing, and even the shade of trees for packing up, and I barely finished when Rebi turned up.

We rewarded ourself with great pizzas and a swim in the pool. Lifesavers! While it´s pouring rain at home in Germany, it´s stinking hot in central Italy!

Marco Laurenzi won the day, and Roland Wöhrle finished on a fast 7th place as top German pilot.

Results and official comp page HM 21

So happy I made goal today! But yesterday, I even won the day! And I thought I´d be last. But it was tough for many to get anywhere.

Here you find more photos and the official results. And a new scoring system too! Hessenmeisterschaft 21

Hessenmeisterschaft 2021

Even though weather conditions looked more than doubtful, I decided to join my regional championships, Hessenmeisterschaft, in Carinthia. It rained on takeoff, but around midday the rain stopped and it started clearing up, so the few of us started into a 66km task.

It felt great to fly around some mountains again, but the flight was too short. Some clouds turned the whole valley into shade, and before the sun was back, I landed after barely 20km. Very good training, but I have no idea where I´m ranking today, or if there were any points at all.

A new title: German XC champion 2020 (ladies)

Even though I only had about 3 weeks to go flying this year, I managed to cover enough kilometres in the air to get 1st place in our national German XC championship (women)!

Without friends and their support, I couldn´t have done it. I hadn´t flown in over a year, cause my mom got really sick last year, then corona started and all comps, including the Women´s world championship in Florida that I had so looked forward to, got cancelled. So it´s about time I say thanks to a few people :)

When Harald Stephan invited me to take a tandem flight with him at Tegelberg in his Atos rigid wing, I was happy to start spreading my wings again after a long lockdown.

In the end of August, I managed to squeeze in a few days in Greifenburg with my friend Rebi. We enjoyed the very warm welcome back of Bettina (Pension Zippo) and the Thaler family in Weisach - it was really like coming home. Just what I needed after all that stress about job, taking care of my lovely, but very stubborn parents for months, and changing from going around the globe twice a month to staying just in Germany for months. Something I hadn´t done since I moved out of my parents home, but now the only sensible thing had been: moving back in.

At Emberger Alm, I coached Rebi´s steps back into hang gliding, and she helped me a lot with my first paragliding flights after a long break. We had fun, and lots of flights. We squeezed out every flyable minute of every day, as we both had been deprived for too long. But it was hard work, as we took social distancing very seriously. We went up in our own car and took turns in flying, cause we soon leanrt that the official bus didn´t run in the afternoons.

Landing out with a hang glider is always an adventure, but in times of corona - you just don´t want to try it. It´s exhausting and frustrating, cause nobody really stops to take you back to your car. One day, I walked some km with my harness on my back to the closest train station, took the train back to Greifenburg, while Rebi walked up to launch to get our car down. On the hottest day possible of course, with a storm lingering on the horizon...

A bath in Bettina´s natural spring water was fantastic after all that work!

During the six days we had, I managed to fly an exciting 98 km FAI triangle around some scenic, huge rocks of the carinthian alps, and also a 120km zigzag around the valley when the wind or cloud development wouldn´t allow any major crossings. For this area, it was already very late in the year, usually the great xc conditions are in spring and early summer in Austria. But I was happy about every moment in the air, and about every moment I got to spend with friends!

One evening, my Australian friend Billy and his girlfriend Katia came over for dinner, cause they had been traveling and flying for a while.

Billy was stoked when I invited him for home cooked dinner with chanterelle mushrooms that I had collected the same day in the forest.

Corona´s colateral damage

When I heard information about a new virus coming from China in January, I was alarmed to hear that they quarantined cities by destroying highways. Of course I was hoping for the best, but I clearly remembered Sars and Swine flu, which didn´t disappear within a few weeks.
As my brother and me have fought hard for the life of our parents over the last couple of years, I don´t want to be the one to bring the death sentence home, as they are actually doing a bit better right now, but with their conditions they would be the perfect victims for the virus unfortunately. So I didn´t visit them for the last four weeks, as I might be a carrier who doesn´t show any symptoms. My job as a flight attendant gets me close to people from everywhere in the world, and despite wearing gloves and washing and disinfecting my hands a lot, I might still have it. I asked for a quick test (so I can take care of my parents again), but authorities said they will only test if there are symptoms.
Of course I offered my elderly neighbours in Frankfurt to go shopping for them (it´s really a havoc in stores, so they were happy about the offer).
I am not scared for myself, cause I am young, fit and optimistic. Yet when Davis gave us the news that our women´s and rigid wing world championships in Florida have been suspended, it broke my heart. I know how much effort goes into such an organization, cause I have done it myself before. Davis, Belinda, the whole Wilowtree Crew, Kathy, lots of volunteers - thank you all so much for your effort! Please know that all the women were really looking forward to show the world a worthy World Championship competition, with lots of great flying in Florida! So many of my South American friends entered the comp, so many new, upcoming and promising talents - I was really excited to fly with them all!
Another sad cancellation- the Wings for Life World Run won´t happen this year, only if people run individually. It has been a great event over the past years and got more and more popular, supporting research for victims of spinal cord injuries.
I also feel for all my fellow athletes who hope to compete at the Olympic games, which only happen every 4 years. For me, there has not been the opportunity to win an official women´s worlds title for 6 years now - for olympic athletes, there is quite some money involved if they win an olympic medal, and they don´t often get the chance.
Of course, the crisis hits my employer Lufthansa extremely hard. Flights are cancelled every minute. I don´t know now if I will work tomorrow or not. I don´t know if we will all keep our jobs.
Also I feel with my Italian friends - they are hit very hard with the high fatality rate, very fast contagion, and a harsh quarantine. I caught myself singing "Fratelli d´Italia..." yesterday, thinking of my great flying buddies and wishing them all the best for them and their loved ones!
In these times, I hope that people will get closer, despite the "healthy distance" and a namaste greeting instead of a hand shake. I hope they will see that it´s important to stand together and help each other, that our human values are more important than ever to cope with this crisis, rather than fighting about toilet paper or beating each other up over some kg of flour. But in panic, everybody shows a different behaviour.

Meanwhile spring starts in Europe, the nicest of all seasons. Time to fly again. Maybe unmotorized for a while.

By the way, thanks for all your wonderful birthday wishes - I was very touched in these dark times. So nice that you thought of me!
