Tonight between 5.45pm and 6.45 pm there will be a short film about me hanggliding at Hochries. The producer filmed me from a paragliding tandem, pilot Martin Walleitner flew with her many hours.
My travels through the skies of the world - have fun reading about my adventures, and I hope you´re flying with me in your thoughts!

Tag 10, 11, 12 / Day 10, 11, 12
Tag 10, 11, 12 / Day 10, 11, 12
The 10th day was cancelled due to quite strong southerly winds and a very low chance of thermals. Some pilots took off anyway, bombed out and showed us that the forecast was correct.
On the 11th comp day we went to the Brgud start again. Good thermals and high cloudbase predicted, we still had to fully concentrate on the shallow and rocky slope. Task was 108km around 5 turnpoints. And again the question about the ceiling of 2100m because of the vicinity of commercial airports. The two previous comp days this height was already passed by most of the comp pilots, but it didnt have any consequenses in points or penalties.
When the launch window opened, we didnt have to wait long for the first push. Difficult cross and light wind conditions made our take offs difficult and slow. Then a shock – Primoz, placed 3rd in the comp, ran and ran, but the glider didnt fly, and finally he hit the ground pretty hard! We were all shaken and feared for our friend, boyfriend of our team leader Regina. Luckily he got up alright, he wasnt hurt at all, and with the help of the French team and their spare parts, Primoz repaired his glider and was able to properly take off! And he even got to goal on that day, a great guy with a good attitude.
I got around the course quite fast, just made a mistake before the last turnpoint by leaving the ridge too low. Since there were no thermal in the flats, I had to land 6km before goal. Even worse, my team mates Christian and Roland landed 1km and 300m in front of the goal line...
When I was online the next morning at headquarter, Gordon Rigg from the British team sneaked around in a strange way without talking to anyone, so I already had an idea of what might be going on later. And yes, the Pommies put in a protest against the height violations of pilots during the previous day. The FAI-Jury decided that the day had to be cancelled, which immediately started loud discussions on take off, since cloud base was obviously higher than 2100m and created the same problem.
Proposal of the German team was to donate some 3D GPS for the 19 people who handed in 2D tracklogs, so the organizer could easily check for height violations. Unfortunately, the proposal was turned down and the last day was cancelled too. Quite ironic, to cancel a day because the weather is TOO GOOD! Well, last year the organizers were faced with the problem and had promised to get allowance for a higher ceiling for the Europeans, without success...
As a reasult of the British protest and the cancelled day, the Swiss team went from 3rd back to 4th place, and the pommies went up one place into 3rd. Hm, they didnt question the two prior days when some of their pilots placed very well.
This bad sportsmanship got its comments at the award ceremony this morning, when pilots didnt clap but yelled, shouted and whistled when the British team went up the podium. The Austrians as the winning team and the 2nd placed French avoided being on the podium with the British, but went over to the Swiss team and had their photos taken with them. Really sad if people who cant win in the air just try to decide the competition on paper.
Overall winner is the young Litespeed pilot from Graz, Austria, Michael Friesenbichler, 2nd the Ukrainian Oleg Bondarschuk, and 3rd Primoz Gricar from Slovenia.
Our team placed 5th with Roland Wöhrle in 16th place as best German pilot, and me as 3rd best German in 36th place, which also means I am the best female pilot of the European Championships.

Tag 8 / Day 8
Tag 9 / Day 9
Wolfgang Genghammer from Skyline arrived here in Roc, and he brought a few very nice spare parts for my tortured glider. I had to calm down and face another day with lots of people in one thermal... especially over the first km I had an uneasy feeling.
We had a glorious day with clouds and 5m/s cores – that way flying is fun over here. Nevertheless, even on such a good day you shouldnt underestimate this area and you still cant fly low into valleys without a plan B... The Australian Phil Schröder hat to land in a bad spot and broke his wrist and quite a few parts on his glider. I havent talked to him since, I hope to see him at the briefing today.
More than half the competitors were in goal today. Winner was Michi Friesenbichler. That way he is leading the comp. Oleg lost a few points yesterday, and in third Primoz Gricar could catch up.
I have a comfortable 700 points lead on the two Russian girls who were also in goal yesterday. Despite my „off day“ after the collision!

Tag 8 / Day 8
No report yesterday cause I didnt feel like writing. After take off, way before the startgate, we were in a small gaggle, when a sudden manouever of Gerolf Heinrichs forced me to stall my glider away to avoid a collision with him. Unfortunately, that way I collided with the wind dummie who couldnt get out of the way. Our leading edges touched slightly, as we were turning into the same direction and were both very slowly. With a lot of luck our gliders dove away into different directions. I was able to fly my glider kind of straight, so I kept on going for a while, because I didnt want to land in that kind of mental condition. Nor on one of those tiny fields.
A few km and clouds further, I landed at Motovun on the largest field of Istria and checked my glider for injuries. One undersurface batten had gone right through the sail, and one upper surface batten had been bent badly. Thanks to my sponsors, only the stickers on the leading edge were quite scratched, but not the leading edge itself. I talked to the wind dummie and him and his glider were alright, apart from a bruise on his leg. He must have hit my glider at some stage, as well as I have a bruised hand because the speedbar hit me hard.
Such an unexperienced pilot who doesnt have many flights a year shouldnt climb in a gaggle during such a big competition, even if he has a way of climbing fast. Nor should such an experienced pilot like the Austrian Gerolf Heinrichs endanger his fellow pilots life so mindlessly. By the way, he won the day.

Tag 7 / Day 7
Tag 6 / Day 6Ruhetag. Rest day.
Tag 7 / Day 7
During the morning we had Bora, a strong NE-wind that blew into our backs on take off. As soon as it dropped, we set up our gliders and started into a 78km task, because people expected overdevelopment in the afternoon. There was a convergence line along the ridge, so we didnt have to turn once for the first 3 turnpoints. Even though there was a set height limit of 2100 m, not many pilots stayed below... especially not before heading out into the blue flatland.
At the 2nd turnpoint I saw a glider going down on the reserve. The French Jean Francois Gerard had tumbled his Aeros when he flew at 70km/h and full vg along the side of the big cloud. Luckily he landed safely and was found immediately. When we met him in goal, he only had a bruise on his arm.
Thanks to the strong conditions yesterday, nearly everybody made goal, Regina, Carol and my parents were happy not to have to retrieve for one day. In the evening we cooked together.
The temperatures were very high yesterday, up to 38 degrees. Today the sky is blue again and it will be a bigger task than yesterday.

Tag 5 / Day 5

Tag 5 / Day 5
Today we took off from the west start in Ucka for the first time. Very rocky, flat and difficult. Light wind and a cloud cover didnt exactly motivate us. Finally a little bit of sun came through and we started sprinting. Partly good climbs, and then it covered up again and we had to put on the breaks and wait in zeros for more sun. Nobody made goal of the 80km task around 5 turnpoints, because the 4th turnpoint was too high for the poor thermal activity, with no landings in the closer vicinity.
Gerolf Heinrichs and Dave Seib probably got furthest along the course today. Again a lot of work for a few kilometers and a few points.
I landed in the official goal field, but without the last couple of turnpoints, after 46km. Doesnt sound like much, considering last weeks alpine weather with lots of 200km triangles... But in these marginal conditions I can make full use of my advantages- with my little wingload on my Litespeed 3.5S and the great minimum sink in connection with a fantastic handling I climb through the gaggles like a rocket.
Well I still wouldnt mind a slightly higher bace and a few more kilometers...
My landing today was ok until i stepped into a hole and twisted my ankle. The italian team thankfully helped me, Davide and his driver packed my glider, someone else got some ice, and the French team doctor Jean-Francois put on a tape bandage, so Im nearly ok again. Lucky its a rest day tomorrow, and in two days I will be ok for flying again.

Tag 4 / Day 4
So the day turned out to be better than expected – the cirrus got thinner, the air was unstable enough to create some nice lift. We didnt get higher than 1400m, but at least the wind was weak. We flew a cats cradle around 5 turnpoints and 80km into the goal in Buzet.
Roland landed with the leading gaggle in goal and got into the top ten of the day, then Lukas, me and Jörg landed in goal, so we got good points for the German team today.
Day winner was the young Austrian Michael Friesenbichler whom I rarely saw turning in lift, he basically flew the task straight. Second was Oleg and third our friend Primoz from Slovenia!
I guess I stayed in the top 30 and maintained my nice setup spot on takeoff that way. We will have a rest day on Friday, unless we get a bad weather day before that.

Tag 3 / Day 3
The task setting worked much better today, so in the end there were 26 pilots in goal. Unfortunately I wasnt with them. I had to fight for every single kilometer. Cloud covering (not cumulus, but high stuff) and a strong headwind and also the non-landable terrain gave me quite a hard time. They expect some rain on thursday and with that hopefully a weather change.
Not to forget to gaggle of death – one pilot from the French team nearly shot me twice yesterday. I will thank him today that he decided to let me live just 10 cm before collision.
Our new team member Christian Zehetmair was the only German in goal yesterday, Hans landed shortly before goal in a tiny spot. I flew about 50 km and was 3rd of our team. I had to work more than 5 hours for those few kilometers! And in the end, some people were already at the pizza place having dinner, I had seven people talking to me over the radio at the same time... I need a switch to turn it off while Im flying!
Yesterdays day winner is Dave Seib from Australia.
Today the sky is already covered with some high clouds, it will be another slow, exhausting day.

Day 2 / Tag 2
Again a day with difficult conditions, adding to the strong southerly and slow thermals we had to fight with a cloud cover. Only one pilot made the 68km into goal, the Swiss Christian Voiblet.
Roland Wöhrle from our team placed 4th, best German. With a lot of patience and Jörgs motivation over the radio, he flew around 4 turnpoints . Most of us landed at the pizza place landing field, barely 30km into the task.
Hopefully we will see some better flying conditions one of these days, but today it looks pretty much like the same stable stuff.

The European Championships in Croatia

I barely arrived home from Houston, when I already had to leave for Roc in Istria, Croatia, for the European Championships in hanggliding from the 17.-29th of June. Nearly 100 pilots regularly create an eclipse above take off.
After a great opening ceremony in one of the old beautiful Grand Hotels of Opatija, we startet with a Quest like glider race to get the best setup spot on the mountain. Ridiculous, luckily they changed the procedure after that day.
We were supposed to fly 100km, but nobody made goal for poor thermal conditions and early sea breeze. landing fields are scarce, so it is very intense, difficult flying with the lack of height over the terrain.
Roland was the best placed German, and I was also contributing my first share to the team points.
Keep your fingers crossed for us, especially for the landings...!

Radio Bremen 4 hinter den Kulissen/Radio Bremen 4 behind the scenes
Finally a dream came true- I was allowed to announce the weather forecast on my home radio station Radio Bremen 4 in their morning show. Service-fairy Tina Middendorf briefly transferred her job to me, and I was very happy to be able to announce sunshine and warmer temperatures to my fellow Bremers. You have to be quite brave though to do the morning show every morning, nothing for jetlagged guys like me;)
By the way, my old hanggliding teacher from DFC Weser, Wolfgang Lintl, also congratulated me for my new title, he is the chief editor of the news of Radio Bremen.
Maybe I can put the recording on my site as a podcast if I get it.

Mein kleiner Freund/My little friend
Aufbruch/Leaving
Siegerehrung/Awards
It´s great to be back up on the podium! But what you cant see on the photos: It was the hottest day, 38 degrees and nearly 100% humidity, so we nearly melted away during the award ceremony... to my left its Natalia, to my right Kari. On the team photo the two Natalias are to m
y left, and the cowgirls from the states to my right.Today the skies are grey as if to help us make leaving easier. It was an exhausting but great time that I spent with my Florida Quest Crew friends again. Special thanks to Jamie and Tim (behind the flags on the photos) for helping me so much every day of the competition!
Now we are loading the cars to go to Orlando airport and fly with LTU to Düsseldorf, hopefully it wont be more than 8.30hrs flight time...

Big Smile!!!

Yes, I made it! Kari and I were racing hard today, but in the end I won together with Natalia Khamlova from Russia. Well, she beat me by 90m. None of us made goal, but we got pretty close. Also the team should have won, so gold gold gold and big smile in our faces!!!

8. Aufgabe gestoppt/8th task stopped
Similar weather forecast today like it was yesterday, maybe higher chance of thunderstorms and rain. Yet the clouds looked more promising earlier on, so we set a 143km task to the north, flying along with a nice southerly tailwind. We were about 50km short of goal when the clouds got really dark and our teamleader tried to reach the organizers. No response- so i didnt know if the task was stopped, there was just some vague rumour. Anyway, I had reached the point of just wanting to find a safe field for landing, as far as possible away from any overdevelopment, since the way to goal was blocked by a storm anyway.
Looks like I was second furthest at the time they stopped the task, and Swiss Carol won the day- she did really well in this meet so far, always pushing forward, we could see that the aussie training helped her improve a lot! Kari was 2km behind me when the task was stopped, so I slightly added to my points ahead of her.
Our team did well, Monique, Sybille and Rosi got quite far along the track, bravely crossing a lot of populated areas and also a lot of swamps. I guess our team will stay in first. By the way, it was Rosi´s 50th birthday today!
I landed on the biggest runway ever- in Greystone, on John Travoltas airport! I was "Corinna 747 heavy landing on runway 18"- could help myself but stopping on the tarmac for a few minutes and just enjoying the situation... and no, John wasnt there.

7.Aufgabe gestoppt-Task stopped
Today we were more optimistic to get a good task than the other days, because soon we saw some blue sky and sun. The forecast was for overdevelopment, so we decided for a short task. Not short enough, the big wall of clouds was soon in our way, and the teamleaders of Germany, Italy and France protested against going on with the day. Finally the task was stopped in the air, no points today, and no change in the scoring.

Ziel! Goal!
It was a long day, a long retrieve from a 71km flight to the northwest. With a strong headwind again! I was the only one who made goal, but my team mates Monique and Rosi also fought hard and got very far, so with a bit of luck we might have got the lead in the team scores as well!!! the day was very special, I will tell the full story in a few hours when I get up again.
