Canungra last Day

Heute ging es tatsächlich wieder auf den Tamborine Start, Sonne und hohe Basis ließen auf eine mögliche Schlußaufgabe hoffen. Eine Art Zielrück über 2 Wenden und 71km wurde gestellt. Wegen des starken Westwindes, der uns entgegenwehte, immer noch eine recht große Herausforderung. Ich war nicht wirklich überzeugt vom Tag, als ich in die Luft ging. Die Steigwerte waren stark, aber ebenso die Turbulenz. Auch der Gegenwind nahm immer mehr zu.

Nach 5 Thermiken wollte ich endlich auf Kurs gehen, als ich feststellte, daß ich kaum noch vorwärts kam. 50km/h wehten mir ins Gesicht... ein kurzer Funkruf, und die Wettbewerbsleitung bestätigte, daß der Tag gecancelt wurde. Also brauchte ich nur noch eine sichere, große Landewiese suchen. Ich sah 5 Drachen auf einem großen Feld, also flog ich in ihre Richtung. Glücklicherweise sah ich, daß einer der Piloten mir entgegenkam, als ich mich dem Boden näherte, denn bei diesen Windstärken landen ist nicht ohne. Es war Steve Moyes - er fing mich direkt aus der Luft auf! Drachen und ich in besten Händen.

Wieder einmal hat also Jonny Durand diesen Wettbewerb gewonnen, obwohl er diesmal eigentlich die Hühnergrippe hatte. Alle Mitglieder seines Teams (Dave Seib, Chris Smith und Gabor) gaben sich gegenseitig dieses Fieber weiter während des Bewerbs. Seibsie machte den 2. Platz, auf dem 3. der Ex-Weltmeister Ricky Duncan, 3 Punkte dahinter Ex-Weltmeister Steve Moyes, gefolgt von Vor-WM-Sieger Attila Bertok (Ungarn), Scottie Barrett und mir auf dem 7. Platz.

Ich freu mich schon jetzt auf die Siegerparty, denn hier in Canungra wird nicht nur erstklassig geflogen, sondern auch entsprechend gefeiert.

Today we went up to Tambo again and it looked like another task for the last day. They set a 71km dogleg around 2 turnpoints. The wind was getting stronger, so a very difficult one. When I got into the air, I wasnt quite convinced about the quality of the day. Yes I found strong lift, but also strong turbulence and a killing head wind.

After 5 thermals I finally wanted to start flying out on course, but kind of didnt move forward at all. My Compeo reported a 50km/h head wind... hm, I radioed to Big Jon and very quickly was informed that the day had been cancelled. Great, now I just had to get to the biggest, nicest looking landing field I could find. There were already 5 guys in it, so I would get some help. Not so easy to groundhandle gliders in strong wind gusty conditions, so I was really happy when I saw that one of the pilots in the field went out to help me while I was getting closer to the ground. Believe it or not- it was Steve Moyes himself who caught me basically out of the air and made sure that me and my glider were alright!

So Jonny Durand won this comp for the 6th time in a row! Even though he was quite sick and passed around the bird flu in his team. Didnt seem to matter too much, his team mate DAve Seib came 2nd, followed by ex World Champion Ricky Duncan, 3 points behind him ex-World Champion Steve Moyes, in 5th place Attila Bertok who just won the preworlds in Big Spring, then Scottie Barrett, and I ended in 7th.

Im looking forward to the final party tonight, because these Canungra guys dont just know how to fly big tasks, but they also know how to have fun. Some of the pilots decided to make up a band and play again tonight, after their premiere at the red faces went really well.
